Surf lifesaving

Surf lifesaving is a sport discipline that originated in Australia. It first appeared under the name “Surf Life Saver” at Manly Beach (Sydney) in September 1902. At the time, swimming in the sea during the day was prohibited and even punishable by law. However, as sea bathing became more common, the Australian government was forced to legalise it. The ocean quickly revealed its dangers, accidents increased, and experienced volunteers organised themselves to help those in need.

But unlike French lifeguards, Australian lifeguards from different beaches quickly developed a spirit of competition. This led to the regulation of lifesaving as a sport, and the first official lifeguard gathering took place at Bondi Beach (Sydney) in 1906.

The following year, the New South Wales Surf and Swimming Association was created. In 1991, it became what is now known as the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia.

Today in France, lifesaving sport is a discipline in its own right, characterised by the diversity of its events:

  • At sea or in the water, with or without a boat, these are 'coastal' events.
  • In the pool they are referred to as flat water events.

These spectacular events consistently attract large audiences without ever losing their appeal. The rules for each event are simple and easy for spectators to understand. Lifesaving sport, often practiced with equipment, encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from swimming to kayaking. Competitions take place at both local and international levels, always with a focus on performance.

The FFSS‎ is renowned for its expertise in lifesaving and first aid, and shares our values of respect for individuals and human connection. Together, we aim to develop innovative initiatives and solutions to strengthen coastal rescue efforts while promoting the sport of lifesaving.

At Mellow Sea, our core mission remains unchanged: making the ocean accessible to everyone. Through our collaboration with the FFSS, we are committed to promoting sea safety and contributing to the growth of the lifesaving sport.
